{"id":344,"date":"2018-07-31T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-07-30T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.britishasianchristians.org\/full-previous-archive\/2018\/07\/31\/no-knives-better-lives\/"},"modified":"2023-04-30T05:27:47","modified_gmt":"2023-04-30T04:27:47","slug":"no-knives-better-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.britishasianchristians.org\/full-previous-archive\/no-knives-better-lives\/","title":{"rendered":"No knives better lives!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a rise in teen violence in the London Borough of Redbridge, a Green Lane based group held a vigil in honour of victims of violent crime in hope of<br \/>\n    sending a strong message of unity and solidarity amongst local youth.<\/p>\n<p>The East Ilford Betterment Partnership a constituted community group made up of local residents and businesses, joined up with young teenagers from<br \/>\n    the borough participating on the National Citizenship Service with national charity &#8216;The Challenge&#8217;, to hold a programme of events designed to promote<br \/>\n    unity amongst the diverse communities especially young people in the borough.<\/p>\n<p>During two days of the regular monthly community fayre in Ilford teenagers and volunteers joined with E-Gangs an anti-gang charity and Ilford Town<br \/>\n    Centre Police to advise on safety, provide counselling and friendship and to condemn the use of knives and guns and other violence.<\/p>\n<p>Faisal Gill an accomplished Pakistani Christian rapper from Islington, who lost his cousin Jacob Abraham to a violent crime incident in November last<br \/>\n    year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-44987281\"><strong>(click here)<\/strong><\/a>, composed a rap that he performed<br \/>\n    both outside the town hall and before a peace vigil held by the teenagers outside the Redbridge Peace Memorial, located at Winston Way Roundabout,<br \/>\n    Riches Road.&nbsp; The words of his rap described the pain, loss and suffering that violent attacks cause and the futility of violence which only leads<br \/>\n    to loss for all parties involved.<\/p>\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w0mGOQKsQvo\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"708\" height=\"398\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Pastor Andrew Willis from High Road Baptist Church, gave a short talk before leading vigil participants in a short prayer, in what was a very moving<br \/>\n    event:<\/p>\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_kjekH-hres\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p> Young people at the two day violent crime awareness event and vigil were collecting money for a non-alcoholic bar for teenagers at Clementswood Community<br \/>\n    Centre.&nbsp; It is hoped that with the help of local caseworkers and NGO&#8217;s that short talks at the bar will help veer teenagers away from violent<br \/>\n    crime and promote more positive futures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can donate to this project by clicking <a href=\"https:\/\/britishpakistanichristians.worldsecuresystems.com\/donate\">(here)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the young teenage volunteers, Chinwedu Akus was moved to write a poem about the violent social malaise that has plagued teenagers in East London.<br \/>\n    She recited the poem at the Redbridge Peace monument vigil.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LIFE IN THE EAST<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>Just another day<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>Another individual&#8217;s struggle<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>Life in the Eastside of the City<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>Ain&#8217;t nothing round here but trouble<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>In the year 2018<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>London caught a disease<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>89 people killed<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>40 of those bodies lay in the East<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>We all thought Newham had it tough<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A city of angels where demons lurk<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>But on the outskirts of East where things are posh and pretty<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jordan said something wrong, and he got it first<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>It seems like this disease is spreading<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Can&#8217;t be controlled in the East side of the city<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>A boy in Chadwell Heath got a knife in his eye<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>If you and me saw that sight it ain&#8217;t so pretty<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>You&#8217;d think living as a youth is an accomplishment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>But they won&#8217;t even let you finish your last days<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>78 years old from Harold Hill<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stabbed 4 times in a state of confusion and craze<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>6 bodies dropped in Barking and Dagenham<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2 mothers felt the same pain<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Within the space of 3 weeks that is<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Probably wondering what the murderers gained<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>An increase in the rank of reputation<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>Another dose of evil to feel less vain<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Another threat eliminated<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>But the mothers are out here going insane<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Her teenage son does not laugh at her scolding<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He does not lose her attention for FIFA<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>He does not stay up at night talking to a female<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He no longer smells of reefer<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>Maybe cause he&#8217;s no longer there<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>Feels like a large black hole<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This mother stares and reminisces<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Of the last time her son came home<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>Senseless murder here<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Senseless murder there<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Senseless murder in the East<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>Senseless murder everywhere<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Waltham Forest and Redbridge keeping up the pace with their trifectas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Say something wrong and the boys are coming to get ya<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s unfortunate cause they don&#8217;t know the impact of their ways<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>Clueless kids, is it the government&#8217;s fault that they don&#8217;t know that this isn&#8217;t just a phase?<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>I think we got the doubting disease<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The doubt we&#8217;re not safe<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Everyday we walk the streets<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Just to come home and see other families feel pain<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>Another boy dead in the city<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>Another victim claimed<\/strong><br \/>\n    <br \/><strong>But it&#8217;s just life in the East<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>There&#8217;s no loss but where is the gain. &nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wilson Chowdhry, Chair of the British Pakistani Christian Association, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(79, 129, 189);\">&#8220;The slogan for the event was designed by the young participants themselves.
