British Asian Christian Association ‘Meals for the Needy’ service began a few months before the COVID-19 Pandemic lockdown of 2020. During the lockdown in Redbridge we were the only soup kitchen/foodbank serving the homeless the economically challenged community locally. This thanks to our ability to work with Redbridge Council in devising a safe working practice. Throughout both lockdowns we were serving over 65 people a day, 2 times a day. A petty dispatcher and a gardener working at a girls school in Arif Wala, Pakpattan have been booked under the draconian blasphemy laws of Pakistan. Musarat Bibi and Muhammad Sarman cleared out a school cupboard and burnt scraps of paper, later identified as parts of a Koran. A Chinese engineer in Pakistan has been arrested for blasphemy. Offensive language that disparaged Allah and Muhammad are said to have been spoken in an angry tirade with employees. The offence is said to have been committed while Muslims gathered to say prayers during Ramadan. The Chinese supervisor allegedly used the language while trying to push employees to work faster. The killing of four unlinked minority individuals in Pakistan during the Islamic festival of Ramadan, may be a sign of increasing hostility towards non-Muslims in the country. The recent 2021 Census of England and Wales declared a large reduction in the number of people who identify as Christians in the UK, a figure that is said to have now illustrated Christianity is a minority faith. Over 50 needy people received hot meals, other food and bibles during our distribution on Saturday 8th April. Many other regular food charities stopped serving during this period but we have served on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Saturday every year. For many homeless people our service has become a necessity and we are known for the variety of food we provide and our opening throughout holiday periods. Our regular Thursday, Friday and Saturday distribution is the most popular amongst Redbridge’s homeless.
